Alex is a Psychology Board of Australia endorsed Clinical Psychologist. He graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science degree from the University of New South Wales, specialising in sociology and social policy development and implementation. Alex continued his studies with a Bachelor of Arts – Psychology degree from Macquarie University in Sydney Australia.
Following this, he undertook postgraduate studies with a specific sequence in sports psychology and performance management as part of a Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology from the University of Western Sydney.
As part of a commitment in advancing his professional skills, Alex completed a Master of Clinical Psychology degree meeting requirements for full National registration as a Psychologist. In addition, further training and advancement in skills has provided Alex with eligibility for endorsement with the Psychology Board of Australia as a Clinical Psychologist.
Alex acquired a Certificate of Clinical Hypnosis from the College of Medical hypnosis in 2009. At present, Alex is in the process of completing a Diploma of Clinical Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy from the Australian Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy – a program accredited for membership eligibility with the two peak hypnotherapy associations in Australia: the Australian Hypnotherapy Association (AHA) and the Australian Society of Clinical Hypnotherapy (ASCH). Alex at present holds membership with AHA.
To further his professional development, Alex has undertaken a comprehensive program in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) training, building on his existing skills base and providing further strategies for symptom reduction with his patients.
Alex has had a varied work history within the field of clinical psychology. He has had experience within the NSW health system, working in a dedicated HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C clinic – a facility of a major Sydney Hospital.
He has further engaged in work with a dedicated psychiatric hospital in the Sydney Metropolitan region, working with residential patients experiencing a range of psychiatric disturbances from severe depression, obsessive-compulsive issues, schizophrenia and psychosis, alcohol and drug dependence and abuse, and personality disturbances including treatment resistant Borderline Personality Disorder.
The approach Alex utilises in treatment is grounded in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. This is the notion that there is an ability for individuals to reach a greater level of psychological functioning through shifts in the ways we think (cognitions), and what we do in response to those thoughts (behaviours). Alex also utilises a range of other therapeutic approaches including Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Motivational Interviewing, Behaviour Modification strategies, and elements of Gestalt therapy. Recent skills development has seen Alex use hypnosis within a cognitive-behavioural framework, with a great deal of success in relieve symptoms of distress, and achieving a greater level of functioning within a shorter period of time.
Alex has engaged in additional training with specific focus on assisting patients with traumatic reactions (posttraumatic stress disorder) to resolve significant amounts of distress through neurological processing via a treatment program known as Eye Movement Desensitisation and reprocessing [EMDR]. Much recent research has shown EMDR to be highly effective in reducing levels of distress, enabling individuals to resolve cognitions through more traditional psychological therapy at a much faster pace.
At present, Alex is also contracted to NSW Health as a Clinical Psychologist where he works with individuals with chronic and severe psychotic disorders including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorders. He engages patients with a rehabilitative approach, psychiatric treatment support, and psychometric assessments, leading to recovery opportunities.
Alex has been in private practice since 2008. His office is located in the Sydney CBD, on Elizabeth Street – easily accessible by public transport. Alex holds licensing to practice under the Hypno-Band name.
